What Size Portafilter Does My De'Longhi Have?

What Size Portafilter Does My De'Longhi Have?

Short answer: if your De'Longhi has a portafilter, it's 51mm. Every De'Longhi espresso machine that takes a portafilter - the Dedica, the whole La Specialista range, the Icona, and the older EC and ECP models - uses a 51mm portafilter and basket.

But 51mm isn't quite the whole story, and getting the diameter right isn't the same as getting a portafilter that actually fits and locks into your machine. Here's everything you need to know before you buy an accessory for your De'Longhi.

The short answer, expanded

De'Longhi standardised on 51mm across its home espresso line-up. That's smaller than the 54mm you'll find on Breville and Sage machines, and smaller again than the 58mm commercial standard. So any tamper, puck screen, distributor, dosing cup or bottomless portafilter you buy for a De'Longhi needs to be 51mm - a 54mm or 58mm accessory simply won't fit.

The one big exception: fully automatic, bean-to-cup De'Longhi machines - the Magnifica, Dinamica, Eletta, PrimaDonna and similar - have no portafilter at all. They grind, dose and brew internally, so portafilter accessories don't apply to them. If your machine has a group handle you clip a basket into, you're in 51mm territory. If it just has a spout and a bean hopper, you're not.

Why 51mm isn't the whole story

Diameter gets you most of the way, but two other things decide whether a portafilter actually works on your machine:

1. The ears (how it locks in). De'Longhi portafilters clip into the group head using tabs called "ears" or "lugs", and De'Longhi has used more than one pattern. They're all 51mm across, but the fittings aren't interchangeable - a portafilter built for a Dedica won't necessarily seat correctly in a La Specialista, even though both are 51mm. This is the single most common mistake, so it's worth getting right.

2. Pressurised vs non-pressurised baskets. Many De'Longhi machines ship with a pressurised (dual-wall) basket that forces crema and is forgiving of a rough grind. Switching to a non-pressurised (single-wall) basket unlocks noticeably better espresso - but only if you've got a decent grinder to dial in. More on that below.

So the rule is simple: match the portafilter to your specific model, not just to "51mm".

De'Longhi portafilter size by model

Machine Size Portafilter fitting
Dedica & Dedica Arte (EC680, EC685, EC885) 51mm Dedica (3-ear)
SMEG 50s Style (ECF01, ECF02) 51mm Dedica (3-ear)
EUPA (TSK-1837B, TSK-1819A) 51mm Dedica (3-ear)
La Specialista — Opera, Arte, Maestro & Touch (EC9115, EC9155, EC9255, EC9335, EC9455M, EC9665, EC9865, EC9885) 51mm La Specialista (i9 3-ear)
Dedica Maestro (EC900M, EC950M) 51mm La Specialista (i9 3-ear)
Older / entry models (Icona, EC155, EC260, ECP series) 51mm 2-ear
Magnifica, Dinamica, Eletta, PrimaDonna (automatic) No portafilter Bean-to-cup

Two things worth spotting in that table: every De'Longhi with a portafilter is 51mm, and the Dedica Maestro is the odd one out - despite the "Dedica" name, it takes the La Specialista portafilter, not the standard Dedica one.

If your exact model isn't listed, or you're not sure which fitting you have, send us your model number and we'll confirm it before you order.

The De'Longhi fittings, explained

Because "51mm" alone isn't enough, here's how the fittings break down. Note that the two main ones are both 3-ear designs - they look similar, but they're not the same and don't cross-fit.

Dedica (3-ear). The Dedica and Dedica Arte (EC680, EC685, EC885) take a 51mm portafilter with the standard Dedica 3-ear pattern. The same fitting suits the SMEG 50s Style (ECF01, ECF02) and EUPA (TSK-1837B, TSK-1819A) machines. If you have one of these, choose a portafilter listed for the Dedica.

La Specialista (i9 3-ear). The entire La Specialista range - Opera, Arte, Maestro and Touch (EC9115, EC9155, EC9255, EC9335, EC9455M, EC9665, EC9865, EC9885) - uses De'Longhi's "i9" 3-ear fitting. It's also the correct fitting for the Dedica Maestro (EC900M, EC950M) - the one Dedica-branded machine that takes the La Specialista portafilter rather than the standard Dedica one. Choose a portafilter listed for the La Specialista for any of these.

2-ear (older / entry models). Older and entry-level machines - the Icona, EC155, EC260 and the ECP pump series - use a 2-ear portafilter with a different locking style. Still 51mm, but not interchangeable with either 3-ear fitting, so check the listing matches your model.

The takeaway: they're all 51mm, but the fittings don't cross over - even the two 3-ear versions are different. Always pick the portafilter made for your specific machine.

Pressurised vs non-pressurised baskets

If you want to genuinely upgrade your De'Longhi's espresso rather than just its looks, this is where it happens.

A pressurised (dual-wall) basket has a single tiny exit hole that builds artificial back-pressure. It creates crema even from stale or coarsely-ground coffee, which makes it very forgiving - but it caps how good your espresso can get, and it hides what your puck is actually doing.

A non-pressurised (single-wall) basket lets water pass through the coffee naturally. Paired with fresh beans, a good grinder and decent puck prep, it produces a far better, more nuanced shot - and it's the basket you need if you're pulling shots through a bottomless portafilter and want to actually see your extraction. The trade-off is that it's less forgiving: your grind and dose have to be dialled in.

Most De'Longhi machines come with pressurised baskets. Moving to non-pressurised is one of the biggest single upgrades you can make - provided you've got a grinder to match. (The Dedica Maestro Plus is an exception, shipping with both.)

What the 51mm size unlocks

Once you know you're 51mm, the whole home-barista accessory kit opens up. For a De'Longhi that means:

How to find your model number

Not sure which De'Longhi you've got? The model number (it starts with "EC") is usually printed on a sticker on the base or the back of the machine, and often on the original box or manual. Once you've got it, matching your accessories is easy - or just send it to us and we'll confirm the right fit.

FAQ

Are all De'Longhi portafilters 51mm? Every De'Longhi machine that uses a portafilter - Dedica, La Specialista, Icona and the older EC/ECP models - is 51mm. Fully automatic bean-to-cup machines like the Magnifica and Dinamica don't use a portafilter at all.

What size portafilter does the La Specialista use? 51mm - and that applies to the entire La Specialista range, including the Arte, Prestigio, Maestro, Opera and Touch.

What size is the Dedica portafilter? 51mm, with a 3-ear Dedica fitting. The Dedica Arte is the same.

Will a Dedica portafilter fit a La Specialista? No. The standard Dedica (EC680, EC685, EC885) and the La Specialista range use different 3-ear fittings, so they aren't interchangeable - even though both are 51mm. The one exception to know about: the Dedica Maestro (EC900M, EC950M) actually takes the La Specialista portafilter, not the standard Dedica one. Always match to your specific model.

What's the difference between a 2-ear and 3-ear De'Longhi portafilter? It's the pattern of tabs that lock the portafilter into your machine. Older and entry-level models (Icona, EC155, ECP series) use a 2-ear fitting. The Dedica and the La Specialista both use 3-ear fittings - but they're different 3-ear designs (the standard Dedica pattern vs the La Specialista "i9"), so they don't cross-fit. All are 51mm; you need the one that matches your machine.

Can I use 54mm or 58mm accessories on my De'Longhi? No - those are for Breville/Sage (54mm) and E61/commercial (58mm) machines. Stick to 51mm for any De'Longhi with a portafilter.

Does my De'Longhi Magnifica take a portafilter? No. The Magnifica (and Dinamica, Eletta, PrimaDonna) are automatic bean-to-cup machines with no portafilter, so portafilter accessories don't apply.
