What does a WDT tool do?

WDT (Weiss Distribution Technique) uses fine needles to break up clumps and evenly distribute coffee grounds in the basket before tamping. An even bed means water flows uniformly through the puck, which reduces channelling and gives you more consistent, better-tasting espresso.

What's the "flick" part?

The needles extend with a press and retract with a flick of the wrist, so they're protected and out of the way when you're not using them - safer to handle and store than a fixed-needle tool.

Will it fit my machine?

Yes. A WDT tool works inside the basket, so it isn't size-specific - the Flick suits 51mm, 54mm and 58mm baskets across Breville, De'Longhi, Sage, Gaggia, E61 and more.

Do I still need a distributor and tamper?

They do different jobs. WDT breaks up clumps and evens the grounds; a distributor levels the surface; a tamper compresses the bed. WDT is the first step, and it's the one that tackles clumping the others can't fix.

How do I use it?

Dose into the basket, stir the needles through the grounds in small circles to break up clumps and level the bed, then retract and tamp as normal. It adds around ten seconds to your routine.

Should have done this year's ago

I have been using a Breville DB for years, on my second one. Have always been able to get good coffees but had to constantly fiddle with grind and dose to stop channelling. Recently nothing I tried seemed to work. As soon as I replaced the stock diffuser and screen with this, every shot is perfect. Had to reduce the dose slightly, but every shot is way more balanced without anywhere near the amount of adjustment I used to have to do.
Highly recommended this and I really should have done this year's ago. For the price it is an absolute bargain.

Instantly improved shots! Then decided to upgrade shower screen and get a magnetic dose collar and needles to prevent channeling and I wish I did it years ago. If you’re going to spend decent cash on a machine these are a small further cost for big reward.

Coffee Nerd, is it worth your money?

I make the answer simple, yes it is. I bought the bottomless portafilter with the aluminium rosewood handle and the high diffusion espresso shower screen, both for the Breville Express machine. I am still trialling the product to perfect my coffee but having these items definately made my coffee machine produce a lot better coffee with plenty of crema on my black coffee. The service and information I got from the company is also top of the range. I strongly recommend these products. So if you are not sure, go for it, you wont be disappointed.
