The honeycomb pattern on the precision shower screen isn't decorative - it's engineered. The closely-spaced hexagonal micro-holes distribute water across a wider surface area than a standard stamped screen, saturating the puck more evenly from the first moment water makes contact.

Pair that with a stainless diffuser plate (which spreads water pressure before it even reaches the screen) and you've replaced both sides of the water distribution system at once.

The screen itself is a dual-layer build — a thicker perforated face plate bonded to a fine mesh underside. The extra thickness means it holds its shape under 9 bar without flexing or buckling when you torque it down. The mesh layer turns the water stream into a finer, more even spray before it hits the puck, which means less channelling risk and a cleaner extraction window.

A quick heads up before you install

The new shower screen is noticeably thicker than the Breville stock part, and a fresh gasket has its full firmness before it's broken in. Both of those add up to a tighter, higher-puck space inside the grouphead than you're used to.

Practically, this means two things for your first week or two of shots:

• Drop your dose slightly. Start by pulling back 0.5–1g from your usual dose and dial in from there. If your portafilter is harder to lock in than normal, that's your sign — back off the dose before you back off the grind.
• Expect the lock-in to soften. New silicone gaskets feel firm out of the box, then gradually settle over the first few weeks of use. The portafilter handle will sit progressively further around the grouphead as the seal beds in. This is normal and means the seal is doing its job.

Once the gasket has softened (usually 2–3 weeks of daily use) you'll likely be able to bring your dose back up, but the slightly thicker screen will stay — so a small permanent grind or dose tweak isn't unusual.

Installation

1. Remove the grouphead screw and stock shower screen
2. Remove the plastic diffuser plate behind it
3. Peel out the old group seal from the grouphead recess
4. Press the new silicone gasket into place
5. Seat the stainless diffuser plate (indent facing away from the screen)
6. Fit the new precision shower screen and reinstall with your existing screw
7. Run a backflush before pulling your first shot

Do I need special tools to install it?
No. A 4mm allen key is all you need. The full install takes around 5–10 minutes.

Do I need to change my grind or dose after installing this kit?
A small adjustment is likely, yes. The dual-layer shower screen is thicker than the Breville stock part, and a brand-new silicone gasket sits firmer than the worn one you're replacing - so the headspace above the puck is tighter than your machine has been running with. Most people find they need to drop their dose by around 1-2g for the first couple of weeks, then gradually bring it back up as the new gasket softens with use. If your portafilter is hard to lock in, that's the cue to reduce the dose, not adjust the grinder.

Can I just replace the diffuser plate on its own?
Yes - we sell the stainless steel diffuser plate separately if that's all you need. The kit is designed for anyone doing a full grouphead refresh - particularly if the machine hasn't been serviced in a while and you'd rather replace everything at once while it's already apart.

How is this different from the Pesado High Diffusion shower screen kit?

Both kits replace the shower screen and diffuser plate on Breville 58mm machines. The Pesado uses a proprietary channelled design with 18 targeted flow paths. Our kit uses a precision honeycomb perforation pattern and comes in at a lower price point - a strong option if you want a complete grouphead upgrade without paying a premium for a branded screen.

Why does the gasket need replacing?

Over time, group seals harden, compress, and lose their ability to hold a proper pressure seal. A worn gasket can make your portafilter feel loose to lock in, cause pressure inconsistencies during extraction, and in some cases allow water to bypass the seal entirely. Since you're already removing the grouphead components to replace the screen and diffuser plate, swapping the gasket at the same time adds minimal effort and ensures everything is working as it should.

Will this fix channelling in my espresso?

It can help significantly - especially if your stock plastic diffuser plate is warped or if the original shower screen has uneven flow. That said, channelling has multiple causes including grind distribution, tamping technique, and basket condition. This kit improves the machine-side water distribution, which is one of the most common and overlooked contributors to uneven extraction.

Do I use my existing grouphead screw?

Yes. Your existing centre screw is reused to secure the new shower screen in place. No replacement hardware is needed.

How often should I replace these components?
The shower screen and diffuser plate are built to last and don't need regular replacement - upgrading once is typically all you need. The group seal is a wear item and most people replace it every 1–2 years depending on usage. Running this kit as part of a full grouphead service is a good habit if you're pulling shots daily.
