Coffee Tampers

Shop barista-grade espresso tampers in 51mm, 53mm, 54mm, 58mm and 58.5mm for De'Longhi, Breville, Gaggia, E61 and more. Flat stainless bases, calibrated options, and wooden handled designs — every size covered for consistent extractions.

Why Your Tamper Size Matters

A tamper that doesn't match your basket diameter leaves a gap around the edge — water finds that gap and bypasses the coffee entirely, causing channelling and inconsistent shots. A correctly sized, flat-based tamper creates an even, sealed puck that water has to pass through uniformly.

Which Size Do You Need?

51mm De'Longhi Dedica, Smeg 50s Style
53mm / 53.5mm Breville Bambino, Bambino Plus

58mm Breville Oracle, Dual Boiler, Gaggia Classic, E61 machines, La Marzocco
58.5mm Some E61 and commercial-style machines

Flat Base vs Calibrated Tamper

A flat-based tamper is the standard choice for most home baristas — it creates an even, level puck when your technique is consistent. A calibrated tamper clicks at a set pressure (typically 10–15kg) every time, which is useful while you're developing muscle memory. Both produce excellent results — the calibrated option simply removes pressure as a variable.

Complete Your Puck Prep

For the most consistent extractions, pair your tamper with a coffee distributor to level grounds before tamping, and a puck screen to protect the puck surface during brewing.

How do I choose the right tamper? +

Size first — De'Longhi Dedica uses 51mm. Breville Barista Express, Pro and Bambino Plus use 53mm. Breville Oracle and Dual Boiler use 58mm. Gaggia Classic Pro, E61 and La Marzocco use 58mm.

Standard vs calibrated — a standard tamper relies on consistent technique. A calibrated tamper clicks at a set pressure so every tamp is identical — great for building consistency or removing pressure as a variable entirely.

Pair it with a distributor — for best results, use a distributor to level your grounds before tamping. Our distributor collection has options for every size, including popular 2-in-1 tamper & distributor combos.

Frequently Asked Questions

What size tamper do I need for my Breville machine?
Breville machines (Barista Express, Barista Pro, Bambino Plus) use a 54mm filter basket, so you need a 54mm tamper. The Breville Oracle uses a 58mm basket. Using the correct size is important — a tamper that's too small leaves a gap around the edge of the puck, allowing water to channel around it rather than through it, resulting in uneven, bitter espresso.
How much pressure should I use when tamping espresso?
The old rule of '30 pounds of pressure' has largely been replaced by a simpler guideline: tamp firmly and consistently until the grounds stop compressing, then give a slight twist to polish the surface. Consistency matters far more than a specific number. A calibrated tamper (which clicks at a set pressure) is an excellent tool for building consistent technique, especially for newer home baristas.
What is a calibrated tamper and is it worth it?
A calibrated tamper has a spring mechanism that 'clicks' at a pre-set pressure (usually 10-15kg), ensuring you tamp to the same pressure every time. For home baristas who are still dialling in their technique, a calibrated tamper removes one variable from the espresso equation. Once you've developed consistent technique, a standard tamper works just as well.
What is the difference between a flat and a convex tamper base?
A flat tamper base distributes pressure evenly across the entire puck surface — this is the most common style and what most baristas use. A convex base applies slightly more pressure in the centre than at the edges. We recommend flat base tampers for most home baristas as they are more forgiving and easier to use consistently.
Should I use a tamper and a distributor together?
Yes — using a coffee distributor (also called a leveller) before tamping is considered best practice. The distributor breaks up clumps and evenly levels the grounds in the basket before you tamp, which leads to a more even, consistent extraction. Using both tools is one of the most effective ways to eliminate channelling and improve shot quality. We offer tamper and distributor bundles for a complete puck prep kit.
